David Luiz build up play

This week we head back to Stamford Bridge and feature Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Defensively David Luiz can be inconsistent with mixed reviews.

From an attacking perspective however he offers so much in Chelsea's build up play.

He was resigned by Chelsea under Antonio Conte for his vast array of passing skills.

Luiz can play diagonal balls, penetrating passes, outside of the foot, headed passes and knows when to break lines and carry the ball forward.

The following video was from 2 games, Chelsea vs Huddersfield and Chelsea vs Wolves.

Both oppositions opted for low blocks away from home which allowed Luiz time on the ball to pick his pass.

In order to play the pass he needs good movement from his team mates. Low blocks can be difficult to break down but with such an arsenal of passing skills Luiz gets Chelsea moving quickly through good decision making and precise accuracy.

Higuain comes short, Hazard inside, Kante peeling off, Alonso playing high.

They trust David Luiz to play the correct pass. He scans play, analyzes the movement which creates the gaps and then decides on the appropriate technique.

Key attributes:

-confident on the ball

-Plays forward when possible

-Excellent weight on the pass

-Brave in certain passes but trusts himself

-Dribbles out when possible to break lines

- If passes to full back drops off in case they need to play back

-Incredible precision with both feet

David Luiz is certainly a talented footballer, consistency is his biggest issue but when given time and with good movement around him he is top class when it comes to distribution.
